Supplementary Help for Depression

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

Typical symptoms of depression are feeling sad, depressed mood, crying, insomnia or excessive sleeping, loss of energy, feeling tired, exhaustion, anxiety, weight loss or gain, agitation, nervousness, low sex drive, feeling worthless, excessive guilt, headaches, low concentration, lack of confidence and loss of interest in everyday activities.

Depression can occur due to hormonal imbalances, stress and imbalances in biochemicals within the brain. Depression is more common in women due to hormonal changes that happen in association with childbirth, menstruation and the menopause.

Poor nutrition has been linked with depression; other factors are food allergies, stress, blood sugar levels and excessive amounts of histamine production by the body. It is best to avoid or cut out refined foods, foods high in

sugar, coffee, tea, cola drinks, chocolate, alcohol and cigarettes. Milk products and wheat are common foods that cause an allergic reaction so it may be wise to experiment with cutting these foods out of the diet for two week periods.

Increasing exercise will help with depression and it is also wise to consult your doctor who will advise you whether psychiatric therapy or antidepressant drugs are needed. Also, studies have shown that some people who suffer from depression have found that acupuncture can be beneficial.

What Is The ADD Diet?

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

The ADD diet has sprung from a diagnostic label given to people on treatment for significant problem in mainly four areas of their lives which are Inattention, Impulsivity, Hyperactivity and Boredom. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADD comes in numerous forms. It is a medical condition reached due to genetic disorder that results in certain neurological differences affecting one or more parts of the brain which creates different profiles of people. It’s a condition which normally grips children although adults don’t escape its clutches.

The child in state of ADD behaves and deciphers differently from those not in this state as he has problems at school regarding attention, learning, temper control etc. Such kids go through hell controlling and analyzing their own behavior and trying to work it out, when what they actually suffer from are structural brain injuries provided by their mother’s past behaviors. Hence, use of drugs or alcohol by a pregnant lady is immensely dangerous to the developing baby. It cannot be attributed to bad parenting or willful disobedience of the child.

There are a few characteristics of this disease which make it easy to identify ADD victims.

If a kid is showing over- activity or high levels of restlessness or he gets easily bored and much too often at that, then it may signal ADD.

If these signs start coming up before the age of seven.

There have been a lot of psychological as well as

other treatments for ADD. One of them is having the right diet. How? You wonder…well, for one thing that your diet reflects your mood. Sounds fair? It is!! To make sure try eating something which you completely dislike for breakfast, what follows is you being all groggy and grumpy for the rest of the day. But imagine what wonders it would do if you happen to eat your favorite stuff first in the morning! To keep ADD victims happy is what this diet aims at. This diet plan starts with instructions of what not to eat for the first two weeks.

No dairy products. (especially cow’s milk)

No yellow foods. (corn, squash etc)

No junk foods.

No fruit juices.

Cut sugar intake by 90%.

Cut chocolate by 90%.

No nutrasweet.

No processed meats.

Cut fried foods by 90%.

Avoid food colorings.

After two weeks add these foods back into your diet, till you see some kind of a “reaction” within four days. The reaction may vary from huge red splotches to ears turning bright red to explosive temper outbursts. If this happens stop eating that food if no enjoy!! The diet plan recommends:

For breakfast serve high protein, low carbohydrate meals.

Protein supplements

Mineral supplements

Flax seed or primrose oil.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.

Eat healthy avoiding aluminum exposure and reduce ADD symptoms to lead a joyous life!

Green Tea Secrets

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea? The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book, Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.

Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:

1) cancer

2) rheumatoid arthritis

3) high cholesterol levels

4) cardiovascular disease

5) infection

6) impaired immune function

What makes green tea so special?

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and

stroke.

Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the “French Paradox.” For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.

Why don’t other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties? Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

Other Benefits

New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea – from deodorants to creams – are starting to appear on the market.

Milk Ranked Among the Top Eight Offenders for Food Allergies

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

Cow’s milk contains over 25 different molecules, which have the potential to elicit an allergic reaction. No wonder milk is repeatedly ranked among the top eight offenders for food allergies! In fact, many doctors, scientists, and health specialists recommend going dairy free as an initial test when a food allergy is suspected.

What Exactly is a Milk Allergy?

Although they are often muddled together in conversation, milk allergies and lactose intolerance are quite different. A food allergy is identified as an abnormal and heightened response of the immune system to certain components (most notably proteins) within a food. In milk, the two leading allergy offenders are the milk proteins known as casein and whey. Casein is the curd that forms when milk is left to sour. Whey is the watery part that is left after the curd is removed. A food intolerance is when you develop symptoms after eating a food that your body can’t cope with effectively, but it does not involve an immune response.

Some scientists believe that there is only one type of “true food allergy” while others report studies of two, three, and even four variations of food allergies. For simplicity sake we will just note the two most commonly sited allergy categories: immediate hypersensitivity reaction and delayed hypersensitivity reaction. In immediate hypersensitivity situations symptoms may begin to appear within minutes of ingesting the offending food. Like the way your friend’s Aunt Martha blows up like a balloon the second she takes a bite of that chocolate bar laced with peanuts. Delayed hypersensitivity reactions have received little attention until recently, so not too much is known about them as of yet. It is believed that these types of reactions elicit a different response from the immune system than the immediate hypersensitivity. With delayed hypersensitivity, symptoms have an onset time of 6 to 24 hours after eating an offending food, tend to reach their peak at about 48 hours, and gradually subside over 72-96 hours. For both immediate and delayed reactions, symptoms may be very mild, and even go unnoticed (i.e. rash or eczema), or they may be quite severe (i.e. Aunt Martha).

How Common are Milk Allergies?

It was previously thought that milk allergies occurred only in infants, and that the problem subsided prior to adulthood. Unfortunately, for many of us this just isn’t so. The numbers are all over the board, but it is estimated that anywhere from 2 to 7.5% of infants have an allergy to cow’s milk. Studies show that approximately 60% of infants allergic to cow’s milk will “outgrow” the allergy by the age of 4, 80% by the age of 6. Bonus for those people, but this leaves up to 4.5 million people

in the U.S. alone with a potential milk allergy. This is more than “just a few” people by our estimates. To complicate things further, it seems that it is possible for adults to develop a milk allergy with no childhood history of allergies. Another interesting fact, symptoms associated with milk allergy have the potential to morph over time. One study followed a group of milk allergic children and found that at the beginning of the study most of the children had primarily gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea), but by the end of the study, many had switched over to respiratory symptoms such as wheezing.

What are the Symptoms of Milk Allergies?

Similar to other food allergies, the majority of milk allergy symptoms can be lumped into three “reaction” categories:

Skin: Itchy, Red Rash; Eczema; Hives; “Shiners” or Black Eyes; Aphthous Ulcers (canker sores) Swelling of the Lips, Mouth, Tongue, Face, or Throat.

Digestive: Abdominal Pain; Abdominal Cramps; Abdominal Bloating; Diarrhea; Gas; Nausea; Vomiting.

Respiratory: Runny Nose / Congestion; Sneezing; Watery Eyes; Itchy Eyes; Coughing; Wheezing; Shortness of Breath; Recurrent “colds”; Sinusitis.

To the pleasant surprise of many “psychological” sufferers, current research has uncovered a fourth category of symptoms, known as Behavioral. Many doctors now believe that food allergies, including dairy, could be a direct cause of fatigue, migraine headaches, hyperactivity (ADHD), irritability, night-waking, anxiety, and sore muscles and joints

As noted above, these symptoms may be mild or severe and life threatening; they could appear immediately or over a period of several days; and they may vary in response based on mild, moderate, and large quantities of milk intake.

How Do I Know if I Have a Milk Allergy?

There are many different types of clinical allergy tests available, all with varying levels of effectiveness, but many doctors are moving towards elimination diets. An elimination diet can easily identify a negative effect to a food, whether it is an allergy, intolerance, or a pure mystery, regardless of what the individual test results say. Doctors and patients are often pleased with this method as it is simple, free, highly effective, and tailored to the individual.

Can Milk Allergies Be Treated?

As with most allergies, avoiding the offending substance is the top recommended treatment.

Feel-Good Organics

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

You’ll find tons of articles and lists on how to be more eco-friendly, and they’re all great. I still believe that going organic in our average lives should be a pleasurable adventure, like taste-testing, not a social or political statement.

Organic food:

On a pretty autumn Saturday, swing into a local organic farm stand and browse. Nothing is better than locally grown produce that’s grown exclusively for flavor and color, compared with supermarket veggies grown to withstand harsh cross country shipments.

Visit local pumpkin farms at harvest time. In many areas of the country, families annually enjoy autumn weekend outings to pumpkin farms that are a riot of color, and absolutely packed with incredible organic vegetables at great prices. Try organic apple orchards and berry farms where you can pick your own baskets.

Try organic coffee. Yum! More stores are carrying organic java now, which may cost more but has rich flavors that cannot be matched by chemically processed coffees. Look for the Fair Trade label which means beans grown and harvested by organic farms and coops around the world, who get a fairer price. Organic coffee farmers are better able to feed their families, provide education for the children, and provide community services we take for granted.

Absolutely plant some herbs. There’s nothing like clipping some basil and oregano from your own garden patch or patio pots, for your favorite sauce recipe. Most herbs don’t require much babying and come back year after year.

Go Vegetarian?

That’s a very personal decision. If

your family is accustomed to meats, I suggest initially just cutting back on the burgers and introducing more fish, and more vegetable based entrees with cheese. Some restaurant chains are introducing vegetarian appetizers and entrees that are so good, being meatless is more of a bonus. Try some vegetarian dishes. If you and your family like them, add them to the menu.

Is an Organic Home too high-end?

No, not at all. While organic bedding and organic cottons for bed and bath are typically considered luxury items, they are for EVERYBODY. No need to strip your bedrooms and go nuts, unless you want to. In the range of around $100, you can pick up a few organic cotton bathtowels, an organic cotton bathrobe, or some basic organic cotton sheets.

Organic cotton blankets and throws are also around the $100 range, and the quality is amazing. Organic cotton and wool comforters are a bit more expensive, but will last years longer than conventional comforters. Gradually replace old pummeled bed pillows with organic cotton or wool fill pillows, that range between $50 and $100 apiece, depending on size.

Organic cotton underwear is very affordable. You can replace a bunch of undies for around $100.00, and good local or web-based stores are easy to find.

Organic foods and home products are to be enjoyed, and integration into our normal lives should be natural, pleasurable, and easy.

Secrets of Food Combining

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

The observance of rules of food combining is neither faddish nor eccentric. It is a simple, scientifically-based system of selecting foods, from among different types, which are compatible. This facilitates easy and efficient digestion and ensures after-meal comfort.

Digestion is not merely chemical or physical process, but also a physiological one. When foodenters the body, it undergoes several changes before it is broken down into its constituent partsand assimilated. But no food can be assimilated by the system and used by various organsunless it has first been digested and then absorbed in the digestive system known as alimentarycanal, while the residue, unfit for absorption is eliminated from the system.

The chemical part of digestion is accomplished by a series of juices and their enzymes. Thejuices alternate between alkalies and acids, and their character is determined by the requirementof the enzymes they contain. These enzymes remain active in suitable media of well definedacid-alkaline ranges and are destroyed in unsuitable media. For instance, the salivary amylase ( ptyalin ) or starch-splitting enzyme of the mouth is activeonly in an alkaline media and is destroyed by a mild acid. The gastric enzyme, pepsin, whichinitiates protein digestion, is active only in the acid medium and is destroyed by alkalies.

A noteworthy feature of the digestive secretions is that the body suits its fluid and enzymes tothe character of the food eaten. There are, however, severe limitations in this process. It ispossible to suit the juices to a particular food, however, complex it may be, but not to a variety offoods taken together. It is the combining of many varieties and incompatible foods at a meal thatcauses 90 per cent of digestive disorders.

There is a marked tendency to gastro-intestinal fermentation with certain combinations of foods. There is no fermentation and digestion will be much more satisfactory when the foodscomprising a meal are of the same type. This generally means eating similar foods at one time inorder to accomplish the most complete digestion. The most important rule for combining foods is to avoid mixing protein and carbohydrateconcentrated foods. Although every food contains some protein , those regarded as proteinconcentrated foods demand the longest digestive time. They are held in the stomach for somehours until the gastric juices has performed its task. This may vary from two-and-a-half to sixhours, depending upon the complexity of the protein in the food. If a protein food is mixed withstarch-concentrated or sugar-concentrated foods, it will usually result in fermentation. This maylead to indigestion and gas in the stomach.

Animal-food proteins, such as meats, fish and cheese, require very high concentration ofhydrochloric acid. Their gastric digestin will be greatly inhibited by carbohydrate fermentation inthe stomach. This will produce more gas and increased discomfort. Eating meat, potatoes, breadand sweets should, therefore, be especially avoided.

Protein foods are best digested when eaten with fresh vegetable salad. Primary protein foodssuch as nuts, seeds and soyabeans also combine very well with acid fruits like oranges, pineapples, grapefruit and lemons, and fairly well with sub-acid fruits, like grapes, pears, apples, berries, apricots and peaches. These vegetables and fruits are rich natural sources of vitamin Cwhich aids protein digestion.

The second important rule for food combining is to avoid mixing proteins and fats at the samemeal. Fat in foods inhibits the secretion of gastric juice through the small wall. Thus whenfat-concentrated foods are taken with protein foods, gastric catabolism will decrease

by thedegree of liquid concentration in the stomach. Fat will remain undigested in the stomach untilgastric juices complete their work on the complex protein molecule.Although all primary protein foods contain high concentration of fat, such lipids will be held insuspension, awaiting catabolism in the intestine , without impeding gastric action. Free fats likeoil, butter, and milk tend to coat the gastric mucoa, thereby inhibiting its effort to secrete gastricjuice. Fat surrounding fried foods is also regarded as free fat and it interferes with gastriccatabolism.

Another important rule for food combining is to avoid mixing carbohydrates and acid fruits in thesame meal. The starch-splitting enzyme ptyalin in the saliva plays an important role as the foodis chewed. It converts the complex starch molecules into simpler sugars. Ptyalin requires aneutral or slightly alkaline medium for proper functioning and this is the normal condition of thesaliva in the mouth. However, when acid foods are taken, the action of ptyalin is halted. It is,therefore, necessary to avoid acid fruits in the same meal as sweet fruits or starches. Thustomatoes should not be eaten with starches especially potatoes or bread.Refined sugar products are also acidic, both in the mouth and in the bloodstream. The acidifyingof the saliva by sucrose is one of the main causes of tooth decay. It can also cause severedamage to the digestion.

Food combining is designed to facilitate easier digestion. In a nutshell, starches, fats, green vegetables and sugars may be eaten together as they requireeither an alkaline or neutral medium for their digestion. Similarly, proteins, green vegetables andacid fruits may be eaten together as they require an acid or neutral medium for their digestion.

But starches and proteins, fats and proteins and starches and acid fruits should not be eatentogether as a general rule, if the best results are required from the ingestion of the food eaten.

This in brief is the whole basis for successful food combination. An important point to remember about meals is that the smaller the number of courses theyconsist of, the better it will be. They should approximate to a one-course meal as much aspossible. Simple meals in every way are more conducive to health, than more elaborate ones,no matter how well they may be combined.

A meal consisting of proteins, carbohydrates and fats may remain in the stomach for six to sevenhours before the stomach is emptied. If carbohydrates are eaten without proteins, they remain inthe stomach for a relatively short period. A fruit meal remains in the stomach for even shortertime. It is advisable to eat these different foods at different meals – a fruit meal, a starch mealand a protein meal. The ideal practice is a fruit meal for breakfast, a starch meal with salad andnon- starchy vegetables for lunch, and a protein meal with a salad and non-starchy vegetablesfor dinner.

Proteins: Nuts, seeds, soyabeans, cheese, eggs, poultry* meat*, fish*, yogurt.

Fats: Oils, olive, butter, margarine.

Starches: Whole cereals, peas, beans, lentils.

Vegetables: Leafy green vegetables, sprouted seeds, cabbage cauliflower, brocoli, green peas, celery, tomatoes, onions.

Sweet Fruits: Bananas, fits, custard apples, all-dried fruits, dates.

Sub-acid-fruits: Grapes, pears, apples, peaches, apricots, plums, fruits guavas, raspberries.

Do You Make This Mistake Using Fructose?

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

Fructose, also known as levulose or fruit sugar, is found in fruit, honey, table sugar and other sweeteners, and in many processed foods There is between 1 and 7% fructose in fruits, although some of them have much higher amounts. Some root vegetables, such as beets, parsnips and onions, sweet potatoes, contain fructose, usually in combination with glucose and sucrose. Fructose makes up about 40% of the dry weight of honey,

As you can see, there is fructose almost all around.

Recently scientists have found that fructose may trick you into thinking you are hungrier than you should be. The findings could influence future dietary guidelines by implicating fructose in the epidemic obesity.

Of course, physical inactivity, consumption of high-fat foods and increased caloric intake undoubtedly have a significant part of contribution in making people obese. But people are feasting on more fructose than ever. And the danger doesn’t come from natural fructose you take from fruits and some root vegetables. This kind of fructose is easily absorbed by human body

during the digestion process without side effects.

The problems come with fructose contained in soft drinks, jellies, pastries, ketchup and table sugar, and, among other processed foods, in high fructose corn syrup aggressively promoted as natural sugars substitute. This kind of fructose is not pure like the one from fruit is. It’s a commercial, refined sugar.

As is the case with any other refined food, a little refined fructose won’t hurt, but you should avoid it. High fructose consumption raises blood levels of cholesterol and has been fingered as a causative factor in heart disease by causing an unnatural tendency toward blood clotting. Over consumption of fructose may also accelerate the aging process.

There is no a safe amount of fructose, but in small and pure amounts it’s not a bad substance. If you mainly eat natural foods, and avoid large quantities of processed ones, you have no reasons to worry about.

Eating Disorders – How To Prevent Them

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

In this article in our continuing series on eating disorders we’re going to concentrate on how to prevent an eating disorder from ever starting in the first place.

There are a number of things someone can do to see that they never fall into the trap of dealing with an eating disorder.

The most important thing a person can do is get educated. Learn everything there is to know about Anorexia, Bulimia, and binge eating disorders. Awareness of these diseases will help you make informed decisions about what constitutes proper food intake and what your body should look like for your height and bone structure.

Get the idea out of your head that diet and the way your body will ultimate look will lead to happiness. There is more to being happy than just looks. This helps build self esteem.

Challenge the ideas that weight loss and being thin are great and anything to do with fat is a bad thing. Naturally you don’t want to eat to the point of obesity. But you do want to strike a balance between the two.

Try not to categorize foods as being either good or bad, fattening or slimming. Try to remember that we need a balanced diet in our lives.

Don’t judge others and yourself by their appearance of being either fat or thin. It’s what’s inside a person that counts. Look beyond the physical appearance.

Try to avoid the feeling that people will like you better if you lose weight. Remember that your friends are your friends and will like

you no matter what you look like.

Become critical of the media and their messages that in order to be popular you need to be thin. If you see one of these ads, yell back at the TV. If you see one of these ads in print, write to the editor. Don’t let the media beat you.

If you think someone has an eating disorder confront them in a personal caring manner. Show them your concern without being judgmental. Offer them support as someone they can speak to.

Most of all, be a model of self esteem and body image. Carry yourself in such a way that others will notice and respect you, regardless of how heavy or thin you may or may not be. Talk about yourself with confidence in a manner that commands respect and appreciation. Value yourself based on your goals, what you’ve achieved, your talents and your character. Avoid the way you feel about your body weight becoming the main focus and the ruler of your day. Realize that everyone has a different body and shape and regardless of that shape everyone has value, not based on their looks.

Finally, support local organizations and non profit eating disorder associations by making donations or volunteering your time. Your donations may someday lead to a cure for these type of illnesses.

Hopefully, by doing all of the above, you can prevent someone you care about, especially yourself, from falling victim to one of these terrible diseases.

How My Health Was Restored Through Glyconutrition

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

My name is Mildred Shears. I’m retired and I live in the Minnesota Northwoods with my husband, George, our German Shorthair, Bodhi, and our senior citizen cat, Cinnamon.

A Sudden Transition from Health to Helplessness

On a hot summer day in 1983, I had a very sudden attack of extreme dizziness. For the next two years, I was in bed or a wheel chair and could only walk with assistance. Doctors had nothing to help me. I took a lot of supplements and tried many forms of alternative healing.

19 Years of Daily Adjustment to Unpredictable Health

I gradually got so I could walk again, but I continued to suffer from extreme fatigue and heat sensitivity. Due to inactivity, I gained a lot of weight and was sick most of the time.

Every day was a struggle to do any normal task or activity. As a mother I could not participate in actively spending time with my teen-age daughter because I did not have the energy. I could never predict when I would collapse and have to stop and rest. Planning ahead for working, shopping, preparing meals, doing housework or just visiting was impossible.

Besides being limited to doing only one major activity in a day, I needed to sleep at least 16 hours, take naps and I still felt tired most of the time.

A Welcome Invitation to Restored Health

In September, 2002, an old friend told me about glyconutrition. After thoroughly researching this revolutionary new nutritional supplement, I decided to try it. In less than 6 months, both my fatigue and sensitivity to heat had disappeared. Since then, I’ve been filled with boundless energy and vitality and can do all the things that I missed out on for all those years. I’ve also lost around 55 lbs. and I’m vibrantly healthy. For the past 18 months, I’ve seen my doctor only for routine check-ups.

A New Life of Vitality and Wellness

Over the past two years, I’ve heard several hundred stories very similar to mine

from people who’ve used these amazing supplements. I’m fully convinced at this point that anyone who takes enough of them for a long enough period of time (several months for some people) will enjoy a marked improvement in their level of health and wellness. I will continue to take these supplements daily to preserve and maintain my health and wellness.

How to Share in this Gift of Wellness

Now, I wonder whether you–or anyone you know–might be interested in learning more about these glyconutritional products. If you’re like me (and most people I know), you’re probably thinking “this sounds way too good to be true.” Well, I can tell you for sure that, for me, it has turned out, instead, to be something “much too good to miss.”

I believe strongly that anyone who does a thorough investigation of these products, along with their scientific underpinnings, will recognize that they are entirely different from any other type of nutritional supplement. Further–for whatever it’s worth–I believe that if you give them an honest try, your health and your life–like mine–will be changed in some very wonderful ways. I predict, further, that–just like me–you’ll want to share this wondrous gift with everyone who will listen. For me, this has become a new and very satisfying life mission.

If you’d like to learn more, I invite you to click on the URL below, where you will be able to get a free, 35-page e-book entitled “The Ten Deadly Health Myths of the 21st Century.” This highly informative book provides a great deal of additional information about glyconutrition and wellness in general. You will also be able to learn about a number of different glyconutritional products.

If you accept my invitation, I hope that your healing journey will be as exciting and as fulfilling as mine has been.

PRENATAL MULTIVITAMINS: THE BEST HEALTH INSURANCE A WOMAN CAN HAVE FOR HER UNBORN CHILD.

Posted by admin in Nutrition diet

There is probably no health insurance company that could offer you a better protection then what just a daily multivitamin tablet can do. Most couples often forget how important it is to prepare their bodies for having a baby. Micro-nutrients in the form of vitamins and minerals are crucial, both in order to become pregnant, but also for ensuring a healthy pregnancy, delivery and baby. Most parents to be, are not aware that their diet and adequate nutrition, actually can prevent problems that might affect them and their baby later on in life.

Experts around the globe agree that the best way to ensure that you and your baby gets all the nutrients needed while you are pregnant is to eat a varied and well balanced diet. This should include plenty of vegetables, a variety of fresh fruits, whole grains, oily fish (such as mackerel & salmon) and beans. Foods containing high amounts of refined sugars, processed foods, hydrogenated trans fats, should be limited. Some women, especially those who consume the standard traditional western diet during their pregnancy and breast-feeding period, may not always get adequate amounts of essential vitamins and minerals. Also, in some circumstances it may be difficult to get all the nutrients you need through your diet alone, especially if you are suffering badly with nausea (morning sickness). This can occasionally result in several different nutritional deficiencies, which may cause several health problems both for the mother or the baby. It has been shown (Hösli et al., 2007) that a decreased intake of omega 3 fatty acids and micronutrient deficiencies is a global health problem. Preston-Martin et al. (1998) also highlighted that the use of prenatal vitamin supplementation varies enormously amongst women around the world (Israel & France 3%, 21% Italy, 33% Canada, 52% Spain and up to 86-92% and in the US).

What Research has shown:

Already in year 2000, Dr Lorenzo Botto of the National Centre on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities in the USA, discovered that pregnant women who take multivitamins can help reduce the risk of their child having heart defects. Dr Lorenzo’s team studied more than 2,000 pregnant women between 1968 and 1980. Women who suffer from a fever while pregnant have a higher risk of giving birth to a child with a major heart defect, but women who take multivitamins prior to conception and during the first three months of pregnancy can significantly reduce this risk. They also discovered that prenatal multivitamins could reduce the incidence of neural tube defects, cleft lip and palate, limb defects and a rare condition called omphalocele, where part of the intestine protrudes through the navel.

The more common and familiar findings are those studies which have demonstrated that folic acid supplementation during early pregnancy can reduce the risk of the child being born with neural tube defects (defects of the brain and spinal cord) or cleft palate (Wilcox et al., 2007). Just by taking a 400 microgram (400mcg) folic acid supplement each day, during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy (ideally starting at least one month before you start trying to conceive) can lower your risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida. Spina bifida is a serious congenital condition, which occurs when the tube around the central nervous system fails to close completely. Also, more recent studies have also shown that prenatal supplementation is associated with a decreased incidence of other congenital anomalies also, such as both hydrocephalus and cardiovascular defects (Goh et al., 2006).

A study in 2009 (Gill et al.) showed that women taking prenatal multivitamins may experience less severe nausea and vomiting during the early stages of pregnancy. Vitamin E contained in many prenatal multivitamin supplements, has also been shown to promote healthy fetal growth (Sholl et al., 2006).

A medical condition called preeclampsia, which sometimes can occur during pregnancy, can in some situations become a life-threatening condition for the mother. A study done by the University of Ottawa, Canada in 2008

with 2951 pregnant women, showed that supplementation with multivitamins containing folic acid in the second trimester, was associated with a reduced risk of developing preeclampsia.

Some studies (Goy & Koren, 2008) even suggest that prenatal multivitamin consumption may be associated with the prevention of paediatric cancers. Although it has not exactly become known which constituent among the multivitamins confers the protective effect, Bollano & Einarson (2007) demonstrated in their systematic review, that maternal ingestion of prenatal multivitamins was associated with a significantly decreased risk for those children to develop leukaemia, neuroblastoma and brain tumours.

Offspring of mothers with diabetes generally have an increased risk for giving birth to babies with birth defects. However, prenatal multivitamin supplementation seems to help prevent this from occurring. A study done by Correa et al. (2003) indicated that mothers who regularly took multivitamin supplements, seemed to have a reduced risk for birth defects amongst their babies.

What should a good prenatal multivitamin contain?

Before buying prenatal multivitamin supplements, make sure you have read the label, and that you understand what each supplement contains. There are no simple rules as to what has to be in a multivitamin in order for it to be called an prenatal multivitamins supplement. However, a good supplement for pregnant woman generally contains more folic acid, iron, magnesium and calcium than a general multivitamin supplement. Folic acid is a B vitamin, which is also found in various foods, including beans, leafy greens and fortified breakfast cereals. Iron is needed to make the extra blood required to support the growing baby. Woman generally needs twice as much calcium when they are pregnant.

The best suggestion is to look for a supplement that provides 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance of all the essential vitamins and minerals, and never take more than the recommended daily allowance (usually one multivitamin a day). Taking mega doses of certain vitamins and minerals can be harmful to the women and their baby. Strict vegetarians and women with medical conditions, such as diabetes, gestational diabetes or anemia should always talk with their doctor or midwife about any special supplements they might need.

Where do I get them?

You can buy prenatal multivitamins supplements at almost any health food store or pharmacist. Also, in some cases your doctor may prescribe them for you if you have a medical need.
