Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to by the general term prostatitis, it typically affects men between the ages of 20 and 40 years of age and it is thought to affect up to 30 per cent of men. Prostatitis encompasses four conditions of the prostrate gland – acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic nonbacterial prostatitis, and prostadynia.

The different forms of prostatitis are:

•	Chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (NBP) which is also known as chronic bacterial prostatitis (CAP); it is normally caused by infectious agents such as viruses and fungi and is the most common type of prostatitis.

•	Prostadynia (PD) which is also known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome, the exact cause of prostadynia (PD) is unknown; it is non-infectious form of prostatitis.

•	Acute bacterial prostatitis (ABP) which is usually caused by the E. coli bacteria when it causes a urinary tract infection which then spreads to the prostrate.

•	Chronic bacterial prostatitis (CBP) which is usually caused by a blockage to the urinary tract.

The symptoms of prostatitis vary but the most

common are feeling ill with fever and chills, pain between the scrotum and anus, aches around the lower back, genitals and thighs, difficulty and pain whilst urinating, pain on ejaculation, urinating more often and burning whilst urinating.

Changing the diet may help with prostatitis, cut down on saturated fats, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, increase fibre in the diet, include foods which are rich in zinc such as seafood, bran, whole grains, garlic, pulses and pumpkin seeds, consume more tomatoes, seeds and nuts. If you are a smoker then try to quit, tobacco smoke reduces the natural immunity to prostate infection.

The best supplements to take are vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc. Acupuncture and Sitz baths are known to help with the symptoms of prostatitis.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from Prostatitis.

Bromelain (NBP, PD)

Extracts of Flower Pollen (NBP, PD)

Pau d’arco

Pygeum (CBP, NBP)

Quercetin (NBP, PD)

Saw palmetto (NBP)

Vitamin C (ABP, CBP)

Have you ever watched someone who appears thin and healthyeating a piece of chocolate cake and wondered how they staythin? Part of the reason is that they have a set-point intheir brain that keeps their body fat and weight fromvarying~ that is, until they do something that causes thebrain to change its settings for weight control.

That’s what happened to me when I quit smoking. I’d beenslender all my life until I stopped smoking and gainednearly 25 pounds! Quitting nicotine had triggered achemical process that altered a weight control function inmy brain. My body began to create fat out of what I ate, where it used to eliminate any excess calories. (To quitsmoking is only one of many events that can trigger achange in the weight controls of a person’s brain.)

Let’s call the weight regulator in your brain a *set-point,* and a good image for the set-point is thetemperature you set on the thermostat for the heating andcooling system of your house. If it is set at 71 degrees, then the temperature doesn’t vary by more than a degree ortwo before the thermostat tells the furnace to heat up (orthe air conditioner to cool down).

Your brain’s set-point functions similarly, maintaining aconsistent weight and fat level through interactions ofhormones, etc. Exploring the body’s chemistry is beyondthis article’s scope. It’s sufficient to understand thatif your weight has increased (or decreased), it’s becausethe set-point in your brain changed. And so, if you preferto lose (or re-gain) that weight, specific habits arenecessary to adjust the set-point to your desired level.

One. Eat the right things. This is not difficult, if youfollow these clear guidelines: a) Keep refinedcarbohydrates to a minimum. That is, avoid foods made withsugar or flour. b) Eat less fat, but that doesn’t mean touse products labeled ‘low-fat’ such as low-fat mayonnaise.Producers have to use so many chemicals to make low-fat,processed foods taste OK that you’re better off just eatingthe real thing – only less of it. Also, eat less animalfat, like cheese, butter and marbled meat. c) Eat complexcarbohydrates: whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Yourbody recognizes these as normal foods, so it will processthem to give you energy now,

instead of giving you storedenergy (fat).

Two: Drink water. It is necessary to your metabolism andhelps your body eliminate toxins and other excesses.Sweetened juice, coffee, tea, diet or regular soda, andalcohol don’t contribute to good metabolism or health.Keep use of them minimal, if at all.

Third, do the right kind of rhythmic large muscle exercisedaily, and sustain it for 30 to 60 minutes. If this soundslike a lot of time, ask yourself, how important is it toyou to be healthy and/or lose weight? You’re not going tore-set your brain’s weight regulator (the set-point)without exercise – it’s that simple. But the exercise canbe a pleasure once you understand which types to do.Fortunately, your not faced here with push-ups or liftingweights.

For exercise that will adjust the set-point, ‘largemuscle’ means in particular to use your legs. Walking isthe ideal exercise to begin with; you don’t need specialgear or equipment. You could also swim, bike, or jog. Dosomething you can enjoy. ‘Rhythmic’ refers to exercise youdo steadily, repetitively. ‘Sustained’ means continuous -no stopping. The minimum is 30 minutes a day. Forquickest results, an hour daily is better. Your heart rateshould be at a level where you exert yourself, but canstill have a conversation. Go much higher than that level, and you’re no longer doing set-point changing exercise. Inthis case, ‘no pain-no gain’ is undesirable.

If you make these three things a daily habit, (propereating, drinking, and exercise) your set-point will change, and you’ll lose weight. I lost the 25 pounds I’d gainedwhen I stopped smoking, and in the process I learned somepleasant habits that have improved the quality of my lifeas well as my health. Habitually, I eat delicious wholefoods, enjoy a daily walk, and drink mainly water. I feelgood now, and looking good is just a bonus. You’ll feelgood, too, and your body will thank you, blessing you withgood health.

I’m going to give you 5 practical tips to turn your body into a fat-burning machine – information that you can take with you and implement on a daily basis, both in and out of the gym or workout environment. Rather than quantify specific amounts, I’ll be giving you some simple ideas. Let’s get right to it:

Eat Fiber

A high-fiber diet decreases fat and cholesterol absorption in your intestine (preventing fat storage), slows glucose absorption in the bloodstream (meaning more sugar gets burnt as energy, less gets stored as fat), stabilizes insulin levels and delays stomach emptying (both of which decrease your appetite), and makes you full faster (so you eat less). Research has shown that a low-fat, high-fiber diet results in nearly three times more weight loss than a low-fat, low-fiber diet. So how do you get your fiber? Here’s how I get mine: 1 fully loaded salad, 1 bowl of oatmeal, and 2-3 raw fruits every day (fruit bonus: vitamin C in citrus fruit can also help burn fat).

Eat Calcium

Research shows that three or four daily servings of low-fat dairy products can help reduce body fat. Higher levels of calcium stored in the fat cells may help enhance fat breakdown, as well as induce an increase in thermogenesis (the body’s core temperature). The best calcium should come from dairy products like low-fat milk, yogurt and cottage cheese (and not from a calcium supplement). Other good sources, especially for those who are lactose intolerant, include dark leafy vegetables, salmon, almonds, and oats (notice the extra fiber bonus).

Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Studies have shown that people who include a large and healthy breakfast in their diet lose significantly greater amounts of fat than those who avoid breakfast. Skipping breakfast will not help you shed extra pounds, but may instead result in muscle loss and metabolism decreases, both of which hinder your fat-burning ability. A great breakfast example is a large glass of water with a bowl of oatmeal, fresh fruit and nuts. Just remember: breakfast can also work against you if it’s not healthy…fried meats, sweet muffins and croissants, sugar loaded cereals, or processed packages do not count as a healthy breakfast!

Eat Frequently

You’ve heard it a million times before: 5-6 small meals a day is better than 3 large meals. I’d like to step that up a bit: as high as 10 times a day or more may be necessary, depending on your energy consumption and needs. Here’s an example (from my personal nutrition log): 1) banana 7am; 2)

oatmeal w/ raisins 9am; 3) handful almonds 10:30am; 4) three turkey slices 12pm; 5) one yogurt 1 pm; 6) apple 2pm; 7) large salad 4:30pm; one protein bar 7:00pm; 9) handful raisins 8:15pm; 10) 1 scramble egg with spinach 9pm (bed at 11pm). The philosophy behind eating frequently is that the physical act of digestion has a metabolic cost, and by continually feeding, you are maintaining a higher metabolic rate. As long as your grazing is healthy, this results in more calories burnt throughout the day. On the flipside, eating too infrequently causes your body go into starvation mode and conserve energy, which results in increased fat storage and lower digestive and overall metabolism.

Eat Water

Your body constantly uses water to create energy, build muscle, and burn fat, and without adequate water, studies have shown that the muscles are less active, the metabolism drops, and your body burns fat less efficiently. This slight decrease in metabolism can add up to over 10 pounds of fat a year! Water also assists in suppressing the appetite and giving you a “full feeling”. So drink several glasses of water each day, drink a glass of water at least 30 minutes before your workout, sip water regularly at the gym, and drink a glass of water after your workout (speeds up recovery too!). Many naturally occurring foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are also high in water content (as well as fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, etc.), so this is another great way to get your H2O.

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is essential for normal growth and the maintenance of practically all the body tissues, especially those of the joints, bones, teeth, and gums. It protects one against infections and acts as a harmless antibiotic. It promotes healing and serves as protection against all forms of stress and harmful effects of toxic chemicals. It helps prevent and cure the common cold. It also helps in decreasing blood cholesterol.

This vitamin is found in citrus fruits, berries, green and leafy vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, sprouted bengal, and green grams. A deficiency can cause scurvy marked by weakness, anaemia, bleeding gums and painful and swollen parts, slow healing of sores and wounds, premature aging and lowered resistance to all infections.

The recommended daily allowance is 50 to 75 mg. for adults

and 30 to 50 mg. for children.Smokers and older persons have greater need for vitamin C. It is used therapeutically in hugedoses from 100 to 10,000mg. a day. It prevents and cures colds and infections effectively, neutralises various toxins in the system, speeds healing processes in virtually all cases of illhealth, increases sexual vitality and prevents premature aging.

According to Dr. Linus Pauling,a world famous chemist and nutrition expert, “Because vitamin C is one of the least toxicvitamins, it is very safe to use in high doses. Your body will take exactly what it needs andexcrete any excess naturally.”

Fad diets have been around for more than 50 years and no matter how many come and go, we are always intrigued and excited by the next one feeling almost sure this will be the one to work. And they do work…for a while and then we bounce around like yo-yo’s going up and down in weight over the years.

Fad diets generally ask us to remove certain foods and often whole food groups from our diet. This most often results in a decrease in calories and ultimately weight loss. Although people lose weight on most fad diets, they tend to be too restrictive to follow over a long period of time. They aren’t realistic in the real world and once we go on that trip out of town or life gets too busy we drop the fad diet and go right back to our old eating habits. Once we go back to their old eating habits, we regain the weight and often gain even more than where we started. This is followed by feelings of guilt, and shame that we couldn’t stay on “the diet”, which can and does greatly affect peoples’ self-esteem and the way they view themselves and their relationship with food.

The secret to lifelong weight loss

is looking at the old eating habits. After all, this is where we keep gaining weight in the first place! By making small, practical changes in our old eating habits we can achieve weight loss and have the knowledge and tools to keep that weight off for a lifetime. How can you be on an effective weight loss program if they don’t tell you how you were gaining weight in the first place? Everyone has different eating habits. Some people eat foods that aren’t the right balance, some get caught into the high calorie land of frequent restaurant eating, while others are emotional or stress eaters.

Learn about yourself and where your eating habits are out of balance. People who have achieved long-term weight loss did just that along with making small changes to their lifestyle. Don’t let another fad diet lure you in to the constant yo-yo effect. Empower yourself with knowledge and make small changes that will last a lifetime.

Sprouts are considered as wonder foods. They rank as the freshest and most nutritious of all vegetables available to the human diet. By a process of natural transmutation, sprouted food acquires vastly improved digestibility and nutritional qualities when compared to non-sprouted embryo from which it derives.

Sprouted foods have been part of the diet of many ancient races for thousands of years. Even tothis day, the Chinese retain their fame for delicious mung beansprouts. Sprouts provide all theessential vitamins and minerals. They should form a vital component of our diet. Sproutingrequires no constant care but only an occasional sprinkling of water.

All edible grains, seeds and legumes can be sprouted. Generally the following are used forsprouting:

1. Grains: Wheat, maize, ragi, bajra and barley.

2. Seeds: Alfalfa seeds, radish seeds, fenugreek seeds, carrot seeds, coriander seeds, pumpkin seeds and muskmelon seeds.

3. Legumes: Mung, Bengal gram, groundnut and peas.

Alfalfa, as the name

in Arabic signifies, is the king of all sprouts. Grown as a plant, its roots areknown to burrow as much as 12 meters into the subsoil to bring up valuable trace minerals ofwhich manganese is especially important to health and digestion; it is a vital component ofhuman insulin. Apart from minerals, alfalfa is also a rich source of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K andamino acids. Sesame seeds are another good source of nourishment. They contain all theessential amino acids in their 20 per cent protein content and higher concentration of calciumthan does milk. They are high in letichin, unsaturated fats, vitamin E and vitamin B complex, besides other live nutrients.

The fennel herb is a versatile vegetable which can not only be eaten cooked or raw but is also a basis for anise, and is one of the ingredients of licorice. The fennel plant also flavors some brandy-based drinks, whilst the fennel leaves are an important culinary herb.

It is not surprising then that fennel and its juice contain some valuable constituents. The nutrients are similar to those in celery, which belongs to the same family, but it is the essential oil that is the basis for its good action on an upset stomach and its stimulating properties. The oil is present in relatively large amounts, from 3-6% of the total weight.

The Greeks called fennel marathon which derived from their word meaning to become slim; later the Emperor Charlemagne ensured that it was grown on all his farms. He and other people in early times, thought fennel gave courage and were good for the eyes. Bedrooms were protected from the evil spirits of the night with fennel in the keyholes. The plant was an essential component of the wreath used above the

door on Midsummer Day to keep the witches quiet.

Insects keep away from fennel so the floors were spread with stalks so that the fleas kept their distance. The stalks were cooked as an alternative to asparagus, or put under bread while it was baking to give it an aromatic flavor. With carrot juice, fennel is very good for night blindness or optic weakness. These two plus beet juice make a good remedy for anemia especially the son resulting from excessive menstruation.

Fennel juice forms part of formulae for convalescence and for indigestion. The French use it for migraine and dizziness where good results have been noted. The nutritional analysis of fennel leaves reveals an excellent quantity of iron (2.7mg per 100g), high calcium (109mg per 100g) and a very impressive supply of the following vitamins: carotene (4. 7mg per 100g), folic acid (100 micrograms per 100g) and vitamin C (93.0mg per 100g).

You can start today – right now, even – on a road to feeling better, looking better, living longer and enjoying a far better quality of life.

We’re all familiar with the big steps:

If you smoke, do yourself and those who love you a huge favor – STOP. It’ll be the best, though possibly the hardest, gift you ever give them.

Nix unhealthy vices such as drinking, speeding, taking your health and safety for granted, etc.

However many fruits and vegetables you consume, double that!

Those are the “Big Ones”, and I don’t have to tell you how important they are, but this article is about the “Little Ones”. They don’t have the publicity of the larger steps, but they’re every bit as important.

In no particlular order, here are the small steps I’d love for you to start taking. Ideally, you’ll take each and every step each and every day – but realistically, you should just aim at doing just as many as you can, just as often as you can. Let’s get to it!

Limit empty calories. You can’t cut them out entirely, but try to ditch as many sodas, doughnuts, cookies, chips, fries, etc, as you can. Next time you go to your favorite fast food restaurant (go ahead and admit it, I’ve seen you there!), have a salad in place of the fries and rink tea instead of pop.

Replace eating red meat with chicken or fish at every opportunity. The steps will be even bigger if you make sure the chicken or fish is grilled or baked instead of fried.

If you’re trying to lose weight, switch to using artificial sweetener in your tea and coffee, and switch to a diet drink. A while back, I began a weight loss regime. I simply began using the little pink packets in my morning coffee instead of

sugar, and I sweetened my tea with artificial sweetener instead of the cup of sugar I normally used. The final switch I made was going from Dr. Pepper to Diet Dr. Pepper. These are the only changes I made to my diet, and I quickly lost over 10 pounds. You quickly get accustomed to (and even begin to prefer!) the diet drinks and sweetener. I literally can’t stand the taste of regular pop now, something I was once incredibly addicted to.

Begin walking. Start with a trip around your neighborhood or a stroll through the park or mall. Heck, even start with lapping Wal-Mart, just start and start today. Make your walking a priority and don’t allow anything to interfere with it. You will soon be so hooked on the “walking buzz” that you won’t allow yourself to miss a single day. When weather or illness prevents me from walking for a day, I feel crummy, absolutely crummy!

Small changes can yield very big, glorious results. My husband once told me that he had shaved stubborn strokes off of his all-important golf game. I asked him if he’d gotten new clubs, new balls, changed his stance or started scoring creatively. He showed me one tiny little maneuver with the positioning of his hands – he said it made all the difference in the world. All he did was change his thumb’s stance!

In closing, here’s a website I’d like for you to check out: The Longevity Game. It makes you think – and thinking’s usually a good thing.

Keep checking Buttermilk Press.com, as we’ll be adding health and fitness related articles at an alarming pace. Make these changes today and you’ll be thankful tomorrow!

The papaya is an amazingly rich source of the proteolytic enzymes. These are the chemicals that enable the digestion of protein. Papain, which is the most important of these enzymes in the papaya, is extracted and dried as a powder for use to aid the digestion, and it is often used as a meat tenderizer, the enzyme partially breaking down the meat fibers – digesting them in fact.

Many experts, such as Dr Lytton-Bernard, have claimed rejuvenating properties for papaya, especially for the control of premature ageing. It may be that it works simply because a poor digestion leaves the body without the correct nutrients. Those who find it almost impossible to digest anything frequently find that papaya used regularly, either in tablet or juice form, marks the turning point in the climb back to vitality and good health.

As a cleanser you can take a quarter pint (150ml) of papaya juice alternated each hour for twelve hours by the same amount of cucumber or green bean juice. Papaya loses some of the enzymes as it ripens, so if you have the choice select them green. They are easy to obtain in most parts of America but are not found in British greengrocers very often. Fortunately there has been a rapid expansion in the numbers of specialist shops providing for the needs

of the Indian and West Indian communities where papayas can be bought.

Papaya contains arginine which is known to be essential for male fertility and also carpain, an enzyme thought to be good for the heart. Fibrin also occurs and this substance is not commonly found in the plant kingdom; in man it forms part of the blood clotting process. The papaya is an excellent source of vitamin C, with 82mg per 100g (4oz), and is rich in carotene.

After treatment with antibiotics the use of papaya juice will quickly assist the restoration of the normal bacteria in the gut which will have been destroyed by the treatment. Papaya is good for many digestive disorders and is excellent for improving poor digestion. It has also been recommended as part of the treatment for cancer. Therapeutically it can often be combined with pineapple juice in which there is another important enzyme bromelain.

The skin of the papaya is a first class external treatment for skin wounds and places that do not heal quickly. The pulp from the juicer can be used for this and as a poultice.

1. Look for high quality, crystalline, free-form, amino acids (AAs) Most amino acid blends on the market are actually reduced milk or soy proteins. These may contain small quantities of free form AAs but are mostly comprised of whole proteins and peptides. Proteins and peptides are AAs that are linked together in chains and must first be broken down into single AAs by the digestive process in order for the body to create usable systemic proteins. It is because of the nitrogen in these systemic proteins that allows them to heal and repair tissue. Without protein our bodies continue to degenerate.

Free-form AAs are single amino acids, which need no digestion. They are, in essence, pre-digested and ready to form all the enzymes needed for optimal food digestion and the development of proteins. When food is properly digested, the body will make all the substances it needs for excellent health. The primary culprit in many chronic disease conditions is insufficient digestion of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. This may start with symptoms such as nausea, bloating, burping, high cholesterol, or low or high blood sugars. Incomplete digestion leads to a severe lack of systemic protein, which weakens the immune system and culminates in disease. When whole proteins or partial proteins (peptides) remain undigested they will enter the system in an unusable state and float around causing problems (such as rashes, sinusitis and other allergic responses.) Free form AAs, on the other hand, can be used to create enzymes, hormones, muscle tissue, nervous tissue, etc. upon demand where and when the body needs them. So beware of that bottle of Free Form Amino Acids that you find in the health food store. One sure fire test: if it is not a pure white powder in capsules, it is probably a reduced soy or milk protein. Platinum Plus Essential Amino Acids are the highest quality pharmaceutical grade free form AAs, absolutely guaranteed.

2. Look for a properly balanced blend of essential AAs. Even if the amino acids are pharmaceutical grade free form AAs, they will stop benefiting the body after a short period of time, if they are not properly balanced. Most AA formulas on the market will stop being beneficial to the body after 3-6 months time. This is because of the way that AAs work in the body, if there is too little or too much of any one, all the rest of the AAs will be limited in there effectiveness due to the imbalance. Although you may feel significantly better for a while, an unbalanced AA blend will:

1. Not work indefinitely.

2. It will never have the balance needed to strengthen the immune system to the point where it can overcome disease.

A perfectly balanced blend of essential AAs will allow the body to create all the nonessential AAs the body needs. By combining two or more essential amino acids the body is able synthesize all the other proteins (AAs) it needs. A balanced blend of essential AAs will also create exactly the right kind and right amount of enzymes to properly digest food so we can create the substances needed to heal and maintain the body.

3. Look for extra added sulfur and molybdenum to support the liver. When the body begins to heal with the systemic proteins, it starts getting rid of all

the toxins, bacteria, viruses and toxic metals that have been stored in the tissues and cells of our bodies. All these things must first run through the liver (the body¹s poison filter) on their way out of the body. Sulfur (this is a natural element, not the same as sulfonamides which are the group of sulfa drugs to which many people are allergic) and molybdenum help flush the liver in a process called phase two detoxification. Platinum Plus Essential Amino Acids have the extra sulfur and molybdenum to ensure the liver has the help it needs to remove toxins from the body. Keep in mind the body is healing and when healing naturally may take anywhere from 3 weeks to 1 year depend on the severity of the illness. Most likely this illness has been gradually growing for many years and the body needs time to reverse this degeneration. Essential amino acids are not a drug which we have become dependent upon relieving our pains over night. Many of these drugs just mask the symptoms and don’t remove the root cause of the problem. Time and patience is need to heal naturally and complete

4. With the balanced blend of essential amino acids the body will create every other non essential amino acid it needs by itself. So an amino acid blend that has only some essential and some non essential is not balanced and will stop being beneficial after a short period of time. If there is a blend of amino acids that has all the essential amino acids and extra non essential amino acids in it, the non essential are not necessary, wasteful and may throw the essential out of balance from the body’s reaction to the non essential. If even one essential is missing from the diet then the body can’t create all the proteins it needs and will gradually go into degeneration. Essential amino acids include:

L-Arginine, L-Cystine, L-Histidine, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, L-Lysine, L-Methionine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Threonine,

L-Tyrosine, L-Valine

Remember, eating a well balanced diet with adequate proteins will NOT guarantee that our bodies will get the proper essential amino acids to produce all the proteins we need. Poor digestion, disease, infection, sickness, environmental conditions, smoking, drinking, stress and processed foods will prevent our bodies from getting those essential amino acids we need to maintain optimal health and to heal. Also deficiencies in vitamins and minerals will prevent our bodies from absorbing the proteins we do make. For optimal health it is necessary to take a high quality blend of essential amino acids, a good multi vitamin and mineral and fatty acids (omega 3, 6 and 9). Years of research and testing went into creating the perfect balance in Platinum Plus Essential Amino Acids. This testing proved that a properly balanced essential amino acids blend along with multi vitamin/minerals and fatty acids, allows the body to overcome disease and heal itself.
